This study analyzes 30 surface-water metagenomes from four functionally distinct waterbody types in Beijing, revealing starkly differentiated antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) landscapes. Urban rivers sustained the highest ARG burden, while relatively isolated urban lakes exhibited the lowest. Notably, receiving waters linked to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project maintained an intermediate load yet displayed the strongest coupling between ARGs and mobile genetic elements (R2=0.965), signaling elevated mobilization potential at these hydrological interfaces. The findings provide a foundational ecological framework for tracking resistance transport and informing risk-oriented management of megacity aquatic networks.
Traditional MIC-based antibiotic susceptibility testing often misses sub-resistant bacteria, including persistent, tolerant, and heteroresistant populations, which may contribute to treatment failure and resistance evolution. Researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology have developed DP-AST, a deep learning-based microfluidic rapid phenotypic AST platform inspired by the Dujiangyan irrigation system. DP-AST measures MIC, bacterial growth activity, and concentration-effect curves to identify hidden sub-resistant bacteria. The study also identified gadE as a key regulator of amikacin sub-resistance in E. coli, offering new insights for resistance mechanism studies and future clinical diagnostics.Traditional MIC-based antibiotic susceptibility testing often misses sub-resistant bacteria, including persistent, tolerant, and heteroresistant populations, which may contribute to treatment failure and resistance evolution. Researchers at South China University of Technology developed a modular nano-adaptor platform that quantitatively tunes anti-CD3 presentation while preserving antibody affinity, total antibody loading and tumor-targeting capacity. The calibrated platform enabled screening of 91 tetraspecific nanoantibody configurations and identified lead combinations that strengthened immune–tumor interactions, improved antitumor activity and suppressed tumor growth in PBMC-humanized mouse models under the tested conditions.
Maize production has increased nearly six-fold over the past six decades, but reactive nitrogen losses from maize fields have risen by a similar magnitude. A new study published in Science Bulletin argues that the next step in maize improvement must link yield gains with lower environmental costs.
The researchers introduced the concept of green and efficient, or G&E, maize varieties. These varieties are defined as relative to locally adapted conventional control varieties under comparable management, simultaneously increase grain yield while reducing at least one category of environmental input or reactive loss.
By integrating genetic evidence, reported varieties, field observations and global soil and climate data, the authors found that existing G&E maize varieties already increase yield and nitrogen utilization efficiency respectively by 10.1% and 16.7% on average. Under an ideal full-adoption scenario, such varieties could raise global maize production by 18.1% and reduce reactive nitrogen losses by 26.6%.
Most reservoir computers are built with fixed connections. Researchers have developed a 16-kb self-rectifying memristor array that can physically reconfigure those connections as dynamics change. The hardware predicts Lorenz chaos and improves 30-day atmospheric cloud-thickness forecasting by 7.6% over a fixed-topology reservoir.
A team of hydrogeologists and geomicrobiologists from China and Germany has discovered that dissimilatory iodate-reducing microorganisms (DIRMs) do not live above marine oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), as long predicted. Instead, these microbes thrive within the OMZs, converting iodate into iodide and promoting the release of marine iodine into the atmosphere. The findings, published in National Science Review, refine the ecological niche of DIRMs and enhance the modeling for predicting oceanic iodine emissions under future climate changes.
In a paper published in SCIENCE CHINA Earth Sciences, researchers quantified the cumulative heatwave exposure of different birth cohorts and regions in China over their lifetimes. The study reveals that younger generations face substantially higher lifetime heatwave exposure, while regions with lower economic development experience a mismatch between increasing climate hazards and limited adaptive capacity. These findings help reveal how lifetime heatwave exposure is distributed across generations and regions and provide a basis for designing targeted adaptation strategies.
