Paired eddy currents change how sound waves travel through the ocean
Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research (OLAR)Peer-Reviewed Publication
Mesoscale eddies can affect how sound waves propagate in the ocean, depending on their size, speed, current direction and location. Understanding these effects are critical for accurate underwater target detection and long-range communication. Recent measurements of three dipole eddies pairs from the South China Sea have helped characterize the effects of these currents on sound wave travel and models have subsequently demonstrated how convergence zones and acoustic transmission loss differ between movement through single and dipole eddies.
