A research team has developed HerbSyner_Finder, a network community-based computational model that can identify synergistic ingredient combinations from herbal medicines and other complex biological systems.
A research team has identified Crocin II, a natural compound derived from saffron, as a promising therapeutic candidate for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
Home visits are a core part of community nursing. For nursing students, they are not simply a checklist of health assessments. A home visit asks students to observe the family environment, recognize safety risks, communicate with patients and relatives, and turn classroom knowledge into practical care decisions. Yet such situations are hard to recreate in a classroom. A real home may be cluttered. An older adult may hesitate, question the visitor, become impatient, or respond in unexpected ways. Traditional role-play can help students rehearse the process, but scripted scenarios may not fully capture the uncertainty of entering someone’s home as a nurse. A study published in the Chinese Journal of Medical Education Research explored whether a virtual–physical integrated scenario simulation could bring students closer to that reality. Researchers from Peking Union Medical College School of Nursing, Beijing Xicheng District Desheng Community Health Center, and Beijing Fengtai District Fangzhuang Community Health Center tested the approach in undergraduate nursing education. They found that the new simulation model increased students’ learning immersion compared with conventional scenario simulation. However, the study did not show a clear short-term advantage in improving students’ home visit attitudes or skills.
A research team has identified cytosine monophosphate kinase 2 (CMPK2) as a key molecular driver of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) and shown that acteoside (ACT), a natural compound found in traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, can protect the liver by interrupting CMPK2-centered redox metabolism.
Tubular membrane protrusions — filopodia, tunneling nanotubes, retraction fibers — are ubiquitous structures on the cell surface, essential for intercellular communication, wound healing, angiogenesis, and cancer progression. Yet these delicate membrane tubes face a fundamental biophysical paradox: they must be flexible enough to perform dynamic functions, yet robust enough to withstand mechanical forces such as fluid shear stress and cell–matrix adhesion. While the cytoskeleton has long been recognized as the primary structural support for membrane tubules, the contribution of transmembrane proteins has remained largely unexplored.
In this study, the authors reveal that the four-pass transmembrane protein tetraspanin 7 (TSPAN7) senses membrane curvature and spontaneously polymerizes into a highly ordered helical configuration on tubular membranes. This helical assembly acts as a "transmembrane skeleton" — a structural scaffold embedded within the lipid bilayer itself — that resists shear-force-induced tube narrowing and rupture. The concept of a transmembrane skeleton, operating not beneath but within the membrane, represents a previously unrecognized class of membrane skeletal architecture and opens new avenues for understanding how cells maintain the structural integrity of their most delicate membrane protrusions.
A new comprehensive review published in UroPrecision finds that holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), a common surgery for an enlarged prostate, has little to no lasting impact on erectile function. However, most men will experience retrograde ejaculation (dry orgasm) after the procedure, though many accept this side effect in exchange for significant relief from urinary. This review is part of the themed issue “Distinct Themes for the Advanced Practice Providers in Andrology” (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/28351053/2026/4/1)
The development of a highly responsive and selective gas sensor for volatile organic compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide and acetone, is still required. In a recent study carried out by Chen et al., FeWO4 hollow spheres modified with Pd nanoparticles were synthesized using ammonium phosphotungstate hydrate dodecahedra as sacrificial templates followed by liquid-phase reduction.
Diatoms are microalgae whose silica shells form some of nature's most elegant photonic structures. In a new paper, researchers from Skoltech and partner institutes scaled up a diatom frustule by a factor of 2,000 using LCD 3D printing and demonstrated, in the terahertz range, the Talbot effect — a near-field self-imaging phenomenon. The work opens a route to bioinspired THz components such as flat focusing optics, tunable filters, and wavefront modulators.
An integrative review led by the Afrifa-Yamoah research team and co-authored by scholars from Canada, Australia and other countries has been published in Eye & ENT Research. Against the backdrop of the global myopia epidemic, this paper systematically elaborates the genetic, optical and environmental mechanisms driving the onset and progression of myopia, and analyzes the underlying principles of relevant risk factors. It also classifies mainstream myopia correction and control measures, summarizes their clinical effects, and puts forward clinical strategies for personalized and combined interventions. This study provides comprehensive and authoritative theoretical references for clinical ophthalmology practice, myopia prevention and control, as well as future research.
