This study examines the socio-economic feasibility of green hydrogen as a sustainable energy solution in Europe, focusing on production costs, public awareness, and acceptance. It highlights the potential of green hydrogen to support energy transitions while addressing challenges related to knowledge gaps and societal resistance, emphasizing the need for effective spatial energy planning and public engagement strategies.
A research team led by Profs. XU Tao and HE Shunmin from the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has recently constructed a global polymorphism genetic map of variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs), termed the NyuWa VNTR Polymorphism Map.
Hyaluronan (HA) is a polysaccharide with various functions. This article reviews its properties, roles in skin, orthopedic diseases, gastrointestinal tract, and liver, and its applications, highlighting HA's significance in multiple fields.
A collaborative study has uncovered evidence of rice beer dating back approximately 10,000 years at the Shangshan site in Zhejiang Province, China, providing new insights into the origins of alcoholic beverage brewing in East Asia. This discovery highlights the connection between rice fermentation at Shangshan and the region’s cultural and environmental context as well as the broader development of early rice agriculture and social structures.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that causes significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. Early diagnosis, along with suitable therapies, is crucial to alleviating the symptoms. To this end, a team of researchers from the United States of America has developed an advanced screening model to identify toddlers with autism from underserved areas. Their model holds the potential for accessible diagnosis for toddlers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), led by Prof. LIU Qi, in collaboration with Harvard Medical School’s Marinka Zitnik lab, have developed a novel deep generative algorithm, PocketGen. This algorithm, based on graph representation learning and protein language models, efficiently generates protein pocket sequences and spatial structures for binding small molecules. The study was published in Nature Machine Intelligence.
Recently, a team of international scientists led by Prof. JIAN Zhang from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has made a significant breakthrough in understanding Mars' radiation environment. The research team focused on the solar energetic particle event (SEP) that occurred on February 15, 2022, and reconstructed the energy spectrum of this event for Mars for the first time. The study was published in Geophysical Research Letters.
A research team led by Prof. KANG Yanbiao from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made a significant discovery in the field of environmental chemistry. They developed a novel photocatalyst named KQGZ, which can photocatalytically defluorinate polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) at a low temperature range of 40 - 60°C. This finding has been published in Nature.
A research team led by Prof. CUI Songlin at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), in collaboration with Prof. ZHOU Meng's team from Beijing Information Science and Technology University (BISTU) has proposed a new strategy for designing pure-red organic light emitting diodes (OLED) materials. These materials have achieved a milestone with electroluminescence efficiencies exceeding 43%, marking a significant step towards high-performance ultrahigh-definition OLED displays. The study was published online in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
