Brasilestes stardusti lived around 70 million years ago and was named after Ziggy Stardust, the singer's iconic persona. Description was based on a fossilized tooth. It's the first indication that placental mammals and dinosaurs co-existed in South America. For scientists, fossil features showed similarities with another prehistoric mammal found in India, suggesting both shared a common ancestral native from the Gondwana supercontinent.

Inspired by tokamaks, Brazilians researchers create via computer simulation an alternative for better control, in accelerators, of the particles' chaotic trajectories.

By testing an agrochemical designed to increase resistance on the mulberry plants used to feed silkworms, a research verified a rise in caterpillars' mortality and reduction in the size of cocoons. Intensive use of pesticides in monoculture systems may be the cause of silkworm crop losses in Brazil.

Professor Jean-Pierre Changeux, has been selected as the winner of the ALBERT EINSTEIN World Award of Science and Professor Malik Mâaza, will be awarded with the JOSÉ VASCONCELOS World Award of Education. The World Cultural Council's (WCC) 35th Award Ceremony will take place on 8 November 2018 for the first time in Hong Kong at City University of Hong Kong (CityU). During this event, the WCC will also grant special acknowledgements to nine promising young research leaders from CityU.

p53, known as the guardian of the genome, is a protein that blocks cancer development and progression. But mutated p53 adopts new roles and conformations that are catastrophic for the cell. A new study reports on innovative technique that traps p53 short-lived conformers.

Brazilian researchers found that the root spittlebug nymph produces bubbles by feeding on sap, to form a thermal insulator foam that maintains an optimal body temperatures during development. Knowledge of the foam's physical and chemical properties can pave the way for research on compounds that could destabilize the bubbles and eliminate the pests' nymphs in the process.

Brazilians participate in international project to boost capacity of PETase of breaking down polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used in bottles and responsible for producing millions of tons of waste.
