New Zealand Giraffe Weevils are not only the longest beetles in the world, they also have the biggest adult size-range discovered for any beetle species in the world. Researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the University of Aukland and the University of Arizona found that larger weevils afford the energetic cost of maintaining disproportionately larger weapons because they make them out of a larger proportion of cuticle, a metabolically cheaper material.
