The University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Engineering will establish a concentration in Systems Modeling and Simulation under the Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering (IMSE) Department, thanks to a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The new degree path will allow graduate engineering students to enhance their knowledge in data analytics, computer simulation, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), and machine learning for dynamic production and operations systems.

In a retrospective study of adults initiating kidney failure treatment during 2011-2018, disparities in kidney transplantation by race were highest among patients age 22-44 years of age. Within this age group, kidney failure was treated by kidney transplantation among 10.9% of White patients but only 1.8% of Black and 4.4% of Hispanic patients.

GeniPhys Inc., a life sciences company focused on developing and commercializing a proprietary biopolymer technology developed in Purdue University professor Sherry Harbin's laboratory, has been awarded a two-year, $974,349 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation. The core technology, known as Collymer, is a novel polymerizable collagen molecule that can be used to custom-design and fabricate implantable materials to address unmet functional tissue restoration and reconstruction needs, including breast tissue, skeletal muscle, cartilage, skin, voice box and more. This Phase II grant will be used to advance the commercialization of the company's initial product, Collymer Self Assembling Scaffold (Collymer SAS).

A newly launched startup is building upon innovations developed over several years at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS), and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Brigham) to engineer functional kidney tissue for renal repair and replacement therapy.
Local and Indigenous communities warn of a significant decrease in the abundance of wild edible plants and mushrooms that negatively impacts their nutrition and food security, from local to global scales. This is the result of a study conducted by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) that analyses the socio-environmental changes affecting these essential plant species in diverse diets and resilient food systems.
