Antibiotic overuse is a key driver in the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major global health crisis. Researchers from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS Medicine) and Duke-NUS Medical School have provided compelling evidence that short-course antibiotic treatments can be a game-changer in tackling ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), a serious infection common in critically ill patients.
With lawmakers in Washington, D.C. and state houses getting ready to make major health policy decisions, a pair of new University of Michigan studies shows how past policy decisions have affected older Americans with modest or low incomes. The new findings could also help inform upcoming decisions about health insurance programs that are currently open to people with incomes under about $60,000 per person, and programs aimed at those living in or near poverty.
Goethe University Frankfurt is further expanding its research and teaching on artificial intelligence: On January 1, 2025, Kevin Bauer, who served as junior professor at the University of Mannheim until the end of 2024, took up a professorship for “Game-Theoretic and Causal AI”. Based at the Faculty of Economics and Business’ Department of Information Systems, the professorship is funded by the cross-university Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence hessian.AI.
Archaeologists have uncovered a rare Tetrarchic boundary stone at the site of Abel Beth Maacah in northern Israel. Originally marking land borders under Roman Emperor Diocletian’s tax reforms, the stone provides insight into ancient land ownership, local settlement patterns, and imperial administrative practices. The discovery also introduces two previously unknown place names, expanding our understanding of the region’s historical geography and socio-economic landscape.
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), India’s Energy Department of the Government of Odisha, and Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (IIT Bhubaneswar) are collaborating to develop new technologies in renewable energy, hydrogen production, energy storage systems, and microgrids. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 17 January 2025 in Odisha, India, on the sidelines of Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s official visit to India.
