Multiscale energy conversion and transfer in the middle atmosphere during the 2023 sudden stratospheric warming
Beijing Zhongke Journal Publising Co. Ltd.Using a novel multiscale energy analysis tool, scientists have decoded how energy flows between the stratosphere and mesosphere during the 2023 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). They found that pressure work acts as a vertical energy bridge, while a process called baroclinic instability consistently transfers energy from large-scale circulation to SSW-scale disturbances. Compared with the 2012–2013 event, the 2023 SSW showed much stronger energy transfers in the mesosphere, highlighting event-specific variability.

Pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and excretion of anthraquinones and their glucuronide metabolites from raw and steamed pieces of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma extract in constipation rats
Beijing Zhongke Journal Publising Co. Ltd.In the paper published on Science of Traditional Chinese Medicine (STCM), the authors employed UPLC-MS/MS technology and elucidated the processing principle of rhubarb pieces based on in vivo profile of components. This study comprehensively analyzed the dynamic in vivo changes of prototype anthraquinones and their glucuronide metabolites in rhubarb from the perspectives of absorption, distribution, and excretion. It proposed that processing can reduce the exposure of components, achieve targeted distribution in the intestine, and accelerate the excretion of components, thereby clarifying the processing mechanism of 'raw rhubarb purges while steamed rhubarb moderates'. This provides a solid research perspective for the study of the processing principles of traditional Chinese medicine.

New study reveals optimal conditions for sustainable culture of lobster larvae
Sultan Qaboos UniversityResearchers at Sultan Qaboos University identified the best water conditions for improving the survival of scalloped spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) larvae, a major challenge in lobster aquaculture. The study found that larvae survived longest — up to 15 days — in cooler water (24°C) with moderate salinity (33 ppt), while warmer and saltier conditions caused rapid mortality. The findings provide practical guidance for hatcheries and could help support sustainable lobster farming while reducing pressure on wild stocks.
Inherent alkali and alkaline earth metals drive CO₂ gasification of energy crop char
Higher Education PressResearchers have demonstrated that inherent alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) play the dominant catalytic role in the CO₂ gasification of biochar derived from the energy crop Arundo donax. Even though acid washing created a more disordered carbon structure – which typically enhances reactivity – the removal of AAEMs significantly reduced gasification reactivity. Kinetic analysis showed that the average activation energy increased from 164.30 kJ·mol⁻¹ to 210.85 kJ·mol⁻¹ after AAEM removal. Temperature‑programmed desorption confirmed that AAEMs promote the formation of carbon‑oxygen surface complexes, acting as catalytic active centers that sustain a continuous reaction cycle. These findings highlight that AAEMs, rather than carbon structural order, are the key factor governing gasification efficiency.
