Passion to serve others fuels social work graduate

Katherine Kitchens, who graduates today from UT Arlington, was inspired to pursue her Ph.D. in social work after working with marginalized populations at a community clinic during her master's program. Her research focused on cognitive decline among resettled refugees, revealing that older refugees are at higher risk of cognitive impairment compared to other immigrant groups. Kitchens will continue her work at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, aiming to bridge public health, neuroscience, and social work to improve care for refugees

Changemaker K-12: Empowering teachers and students to be innovators

A program designed to prepare future teachers and K-12 students for a lifetime of innovation recently received a $572,890 boost from the National Science Foundation. The ChangeMaker K-12 program, designed by faculty from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s College of Education & Human Development, received a second round of grant funding to expand the teacher prep program to other universities. The new partners are the University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The program focuses on equipping rising educators with skills to teach engineering and human-centered design to K-12 students.

Study shows American College of Lifestyle Medicine education initiative improves clinicians’ ability to make lifestyle and dietary interventions

Trends in school mental health and substance use education

About The Study: From 2008-2020, teachers reported an increase in emotional/mental health and suicide prevention in schools, along with related teacher training. However, they reported a decrease in substance use prevention, particularly among middle schools, and no change in teacher training. Substance use during early adolescence is associated with risk for long-term addiction, and middle schools may be underused for prevention.

Education scholar calls for ecological shift to 'school within a school' to give students autonomy needed for success

Yong Zhao, an international education expert, argues in a new study for an ecological shift to a "school within a school" approach that would give students, teachers and parents the ability to guide their own education with autonomy and self-determination. The approach could replicate how businesses and natural ecosystems and species adapt and succeed. The approach is an alternative to the system-wide attempts at school reform that have repeatedly failed to produce effective change for nearly 200 years, he argues.
