Professor Ruth Britto, from Trinity College Dublin’s School of Mathematics, will work with three colleagues in an international project that seeks to develop new algorithmic methods with applications in mathematics, particle physics and gravity, after the team secured nearly €10 million in winning a highly prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant. 

Prof. Britto will work with colleagues Prof. Francis Brown, University of Oxford; Prof. Axel Kleinschmidt, MPI for Gravitational Physics, Potsdam; and Prof. Oliver Schlotterer, Uppsala University, Sweden on their Mathematics of Scattering Amplitudes (MaScamp) project. The team will tackle longstanding computational bottlenecks and push the boundaries of numerous areas of theoretical physics, such as quantum field theory, gravity and string theory, as well as inspiring new mathematical research. 

“Scattering amplitudes” are used to produce theoretical predictions necessary in many areas of physics, but the process for deriving them is currently labour intensive and difficult to compute. In addition, the team will develop a widely applicable computer software implementation that will enable physicists to make previously inaccessible predictions for present and future experiments.   

Researchers at HIT classified the main FW control strategies of PMSMs into calculation-based methods, voltage closed-loop control methods, and model predictive control-related methods. The existing strategies are compared using various performance indicators. The advantages and disadvantages of various strategies are analyzed for different applications.

“One of the most important scientific questions today is how many potential Earth-like Habitats (EHs) exist in the Galaxy, and how many of these planets could, in principle, support aerobic life?” according to an article in the peer-reviewed journal Astrobiology by Helmut Lammer and Manuel Scherf, from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Space Research Institute. In two additional articles in Astrobiology, the authors, together with Laurenz Spross, from the University of Graz, derived a new formula that can be used to estimate the maximum occurrence rate of EHs in the Galaxy, and applied this formulation to the galactic disk by considering only requirements that are already scientifically quantifiable.

Suicide, a leading global health concern, ranks fourth among young people. Although many studies have reported temporal variations in suicide risk, most are limited to Western countries. Addressing this gap, researchers from Korea and Japan in collaboration with other countries conducted a multi-country multi-city study to investigate variations in suicide risk based on the day of the week and national holidays, revealing key insights that could help form effective and targeted suicide prevention action plans.

More children have overweight in regions with high rates of single parenthood, low education levels, low income and high child poverty. The pandemic may also have reinforced this trend. This is shown by a study conducted by researchers at Uppsala University and Region Sörmland in collaboration with Region Skåne.
