Edge computing on a smartphone has been used to analyze data collected by a multimodal flexible wearable sensor patch and detect arrhythmia, coughs and falls.

The efficient use of cellulose – the primary plant scaffold and a major natural building block – could address many issues associated with petroleum-based polymers across various industries. In the search for more sustainable uses of cellulose, Lithuanian scientists have developed a production method for a nanofibrous cellulose matrix, which has the potential to replace non-renewable industrial even in biomedical applications.

A research study led jointly by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) Gaetano Montelione, Ph.D., Professor and Constellation Endowed Chair of Chemistry and Chemical Biology; and David Baker, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, HHMI investigator, and the director of the Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington School of Medicine; describes a systematic high-throughput design approach for virtual screening and creation of novel polypeptide-based molecules that form regular secondary structures that can be used in biology or materials science research. Baker was recently named a co-recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing the emerging field of de novo protein design. 

Alternating between sitting and standing at work decreases sedentary behavior, but it has no effect on lowering blood pressure, according to a study led by a West Virginia University epidemiologist. Researchers also found that too much standing during work may have negative effects on cardiovascular health.

Two lower limb prosthetic prototypes developed at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT - Italian Institute of Technology) took the podium at Cybathlon 2024, the international competition organized by the ETH-Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zurich at Swiss Arena in Kloten, Switzerland, from 25 to 27 October 2024. This event brings together research centers and companies from around the world to showcase technological innovations designed for individuals with motor disabilities. In first place on the “Leg Prosthesis” category podium was Omnia, from the joint Rehab Technologies IIT-INAIL lab, marking its first public appearance, while SoftFoot Pro, from IIT’s Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation Unit, claimed second place.
