Texas A&M University researchers asked 2,904 adults in the United States about their support for programs that required two administrative burdens: in-person interviews and submitting government-issued documents for verification purposes. They also asked for opinions about reducing these burdens by using presumptive eligibility—allowing access to services before a full application is processed—and “express lane” eligibility—verifying eligibility using information available from other government programs—for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) in the United States.

Knowing who may progress along the disease pathway is critical for early diagnosis and intervention, improved treatment and better disease management, according to a team led by researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine that has developed a new method to predict the progression of autoimmune disease among those with preclinical symptoms. The team used artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze data from electronic health records and large genetic studies of people with autoimmune disease to come up with a risk prediction score. When compared to existing models, this methodology was between 25% and 1,000% more accurate in determining whose symptoms would move to advanced disease.

A new study found that 53.5 percent of surveyed US college students reported experiencing at least one harm caused by someone else’s drinking, ranging from verbal abuse and physical confrontations to academic disruptions and emotional distress. Students who identified as White, cisfemale, transgender, gender-nonconforming, or of higher socioeconomic status, as well as those living with roommates, attending four-year institutions, or participating in Greek life or intercollegiate athletics, were at greater risk.

A study led by the University of California, Irvine has found cardiovascular conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which are known to contribute to brain blood vessel damage in younger populations, not to be associated with an increased risk of such harm in individuals 90 and older.

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) has announced the 2024 Leading Research Achievements by BBRF grantees, prizewinners, and scientific council members. It includes important studies of suicide, childhood anxiety, depression, eating disorders, cocaine addiction, and other aspects of brain and behavior illness.

Tiffany Carson, Ph.D., co-leader of Health Outcomes and Behavior Program at Moffitt Cancer Center, has been elected as a Fellow in the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research (ABMR), recognizing her outstanding contributions to the field of behavioral medicine.
