Elucidating the source process of the 2021 south sandwich islands tsunami earthquake

Researchers at University of Tsukuba analyzed seismic waveform data from the tsunami earthquake that occurred off the British South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean in August 2021. Researchers revealed a complex rupture process comprising four distinct episodes, each characterized by different dynamic behaviors. These findings advance the understanding of tsunami earthquake mechanisms and may inform future strategies for hazard assessment and mitigation.

Researchers at University of Tsukuba analyzed the source process of a significant earthquake that occurred in Myanmar in March 2025 using a novel approach, the potency density tensor inversion method. Unlike conventional methods, this approach does not assume the rupture propagation direction or fault geometry, allowing for a more flexible and accurate analysis. The results revealed an exceptionally complex source process characterized by asymmetric and rapid rupture growth that repeatedly propagated along the fault in both the north and south directions.

Uncovering the rock record of Earth’s earliest continental crust

In a paper published in National Science Review, scientists used machine learning to reconstruct the geochemical composition of the Hadean continental crust. Based on Jack Hills zircons, the study reveals a felsic crust dominated by TTGs and potassic granites, formed through partial melting of mafic protocrust during crustal thickening. The results provide new constraints on early Earth’s tectonic evolution.

PCB in the Seto inland sea: Spatial and seasonal variations, sources, and responses

Osaka Bay had much higher CB-153 concentrations than other areas of the Seto Inland Sea. The atmosphere was the largest source, while river discharges served as a secondary source for the CB-153 in the Seto Inland Sea. With the decline of CB-153 input from the atmosphere, the concentration decreases significantly over the Seto Inland Sea except for Osaka Bay. On the other hand, Osaka Bay responds to the decline of CB-153 input from rivers.
