Despite improvements in economic and social empowerment, women in many countries still have little control over their own fertility and reproductive health. A new study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign explores a program reducing barriers to family planning by providing financial and peer support to women in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populated state.

YouTube’s algorithm contributed to the political radicalisation of members of the fascist group Patriotric Alternative (PA), finds research by Dr Tony Karas, criminologist at City St George’s, University of London. He analysed 40 PA activists recounting their political conversion and found:

- 82.5% credited social media in their conversion

- 67.5% cited YouTube specifically

From benign conservative and libertarian content (e.g. Ben Shapiro), the algorithm’s autoplay function nudged viewers towards neo-Nazi content.
