Progress towards a quantum internet

An international research team involving Paderborn University has achieved a crucial breakthrough on the road to a quantum internet: for the first time ever, the polarisation state of a single photon emitted from a quantum dot was successfully teleported to another, physically separated quantum dot. In simpler terms, this means that the properties of one photon can be transmitted to another via teleportation. This is a particularly vital step for future quantum communication networks. For example, the scientists used a 270m free-space optical link for their experiments. The results have now been published in the specialist journal ‘Nature Communications’.

Challenges and future perspectives on the ecological uses of reclaimed water

A research team from China examined the entire process of the ecological use of reclaimed water from water recharge to ecological buffer zones to receiving water bodies and addresses the key challenges and future perspectives on the ecological use of reclaimed water. Strategies, such as establishing a comprehensive evaluation framework, developing ecological safety thresholds of key risk factors in reclaimed water, strengthening the functions of the ecological buffer zone, and optimizing ecosystem service value and the benefit of reclaimed water, have been put forward toward future safe and sustainable ecological use.

mRNA, widely known from the COVID-19 vaccine, is not actually a “therapeutic agent,” but a technology that delivers the blueprint for functional proteins into the body so that induces therapeutic effects. Recently, its application has expanded to cancer and genetic disease treatments, but mRNA therapeutics have caused serious side effects such as pulmonary embolism, stroke, thrombosis, and autoimmune diseases because proteins are excessively produced all at once immediately after administration. Although technology to control the endogenous protein factory has been continuously needed, there had been no suitable solution.
