A new online Forum on Biochar Research will bring together global expertise to explain how three decades of biochar science are reshaping understanding of soil health, crop productivity and climate action. The event, titled “Review and synthesis of 30 years of biochar research and development,” will be delivered by Prof. Stephen Joseph of The University of New South Wales, Australia, and hosted by Prof. Jianying Shang of China Agricultural University.

Although they are most often associated with heart attacks or strokes, serious complications do not always begin suddenly – sometimes their onset is far less noticeable.

For doctors, this raises a difficult question: how can they record something that is not happening during an examination? A standard electrocardiogram (ECG) shows the heart’s activity only at a specific moment, while even longer-term monitoring does not always coincide with less frequent episodes of heart rhythm disorders. As a result, some arrhythmias, particularly short episodes of atrial fibrillation, may go unnoticed until they cause more serious health problems.

University of Pittsburgh researchers, led by Alejandro Almarza, developed a new way to visualize nerves inside joint tissue in full 3D without slicing it apart. By combining light sheet microscopy with a new tissue-clearing technique called c-Clear, the team mapped nerve architecture in rat knee joints, work that could help explain temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), a group of conditions causing jaw pain and dysfunction that affect millions. The resulting 16-terabyte dataset is now publicly available on the NIH's SPARC Portal, offering a foundation for future research into how nerve patterns relate to joint pain.
