Researchers at Arizona State University have developed a breakthrough diagnostic tool that could transform how quickly and reliably we detect illnesses like COVID-19, Ebola, AIDS or Lyme disease. The test uses just a single drop of blood, costs a couple of dollars and delivers results in only 15 minutes.

Researchers at a FAPESP-supported research center have managed to reduce Candida albicans’ resistance to fungicides by incorporating photodynamic inactivation techniques into the treatment. The results of the study indicate that the technology can be used in both human healthcare and the prevention of food contamination.  

The Phase 3, multicenter, randomized, interventional, controlled trial will assess the safety and efficacy of the Apreo BREATHE Airway Scaffold, an implantable, tissue-sparing device that was granted U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Breakthrough Device Designation in May 2024. During the minimally invasive procedure, up to six of the self-expanding scaffolds (three per lung) are placed using bronchoscopy and fluoroscopy for those randomized to the treatment group. This design allows trapped air to move back and forth, relaxing the airways and enabling trapped air to escape.

Animals like bats, whales and insects have long used acoustic signals for communication and navigation. Now, an international team of scientists have taken a page from nature's playbook to model micro-sized robots that use sound waves to coordinate into large swarms that exhibit intelligent-like behavior. The robot groups could one day carry out complex tasks like exploring disaster zones, cleaning up pollution, or performing medical treatments from inside the body, according to team lead Igor Aronson, Huck Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, and Mathematics at Penn State.

In a study published in Light: Science and Applications, the team described their unique spectral engineering and thermal management methods to create a solar thermoelectric generator device that generates 15 times more power than previous devices.
