Study simulates pulling on athletes' jerseys to predict noncontact ACL injuries

Researchers at the University of Kansas conducted a study in which subjects jumped in the air and a weight connected to their torso was dropped while in the air. The subjects landed on one leg and force, weight on the knee and other measures were taken. The results showed pulling an athletes' jersey from behind resulted in the most pressure on the knee. The findings are useful as contact sports have a much higher incidence of ACL injuries than others and that most such injuries occur when there is no direct contact to the knee made. They also illustrate the importance of building core strength in athletes to help prevent such injuries.

New digital tool provides satellite monitoring of crop health across US

Four biomedical innovators — Carl June, Bruce Levine, Isabelle Rivière, and Michel Sadelain — have been jointly awarded the 2025 Richard N. Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology for developing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, a groundbreaking form of personalized cancer immunotherapy that turns T cells into tumor killers and has led to durable remissions in tens of thousands of patients with previously incurable blood cancers.

High-resolution metalens doublet microscope for compact biomedical imaging

Metalenses, compact alternatives to bulky optical systems, suffer from off-axis aberrations that restrict resolution and field of view (FOV). In a recent study, researchers from China developed a novel metalens microscope using a metalens doublet configuration and annular illumination. Their design achieved unprecedented resolution and a wide FOV in an extremely compact format. Notably, a prototype could successfully image cervical cancer cells, highlighting its promise for portable, high-performance biomedical imaging and miniaturized optical devices.
