Children prescribed GLP-1 medications for weight loss, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes are at risk for nutritional deficiencies – diagnosed in nearly one in six patients (16.8%) within the first year – according to a new study published in the journal Childhood Obesity. Vitamin D deficiency was the most common, identified in 12.4% of children within one year of GLP-1 treatment.
Postpartum women who experienced simultaneous physical pain and depression said that these symptoms compromised their ability to care for themselves and their infant, their mother-infant bonds and relationships with others, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign found in a recent study. The findings are being used to design an interactive app that will alert health care practitioners when women report patterns of symptoms that raise concerns so that clinicians can intervene more quickly. The system will also be used to explore effects on mother-infant bonding.

Some genetic disorders are known for a clear connection between the gene product effected and the suite of symptoms produced. But genes do not work in isolation, and many other conditions can be bafflingly complex, as when an affected gene product impacts the function of many tissues throughout the body. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a collection of genetic disorders of the connective tissue, is particularly challenging for those who live with it because of its varied and poorly understood effects.
Three recent studies led by Christina Laukaitis, a clinical associate professor of biomedical and translational sciences at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, add to our understanding of a particular form of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Laukaitis and collaborators synthesized multiple types of data, including patient demography, range and severity of symptoms, and physiological data as part of an effort to clarify the occurrence and disease progression of hypermobile EDS.
