MIT researchers show how to create “humble” AI

An MIT-led team developed a framework for creating “humble” AI systems that reveal when they are not confident in their medical diagnoses or recommendations, and encourage users to gather additional information when the diagnosis is uncertain.

In emergency medicine, triage differentiates patients who require immediate attention from those who can safely wait for care. When it comes to children’s mental or behavioral health, however, triage scores were found to be inaccurate in two-thirds of the cases when compared to the level of care the child actually received during their emergency visit, according to a new study published in JAMA Network Open. Under-triage, or assignment of a lower severity score than the level of care that was needed, was more likely for children who were Black, Hispanic, and those who preferred Spanish compared to English.
In Biophysics Reviews, researchers develop a physics-based model for explaining performance gaps and providing actionable guidance for competitive lateral flow assays — test strips in which the presence or lack of a pink line indicates whether a specific molecule, like a drug or a virus, has been detected. They applied their guidance to improve commercially available fentanyl test strips, optimizing the relationship and developing fentanyl test strips that are about 100 times more sensitive than their commercial counterparts.
