Growing interest in psychedelic microdosing has raised questions about its potential use in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A systematic review by researchers from Wroclaw Medical University found that current scientific evidence remains insufficient to support psychedelics as an effective treatment for ADHD. The authors identified only five eligible studies and conclude that larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed before psychedelics can be considered for clinical practice.

"Beyond the limit": one million satellites and mirrors in space pose grave threat to the night sky

A new European Southern Observatory (ESO) study has found that current proposals to launch over 1.7 million satellites into orbit, including extremely bright ones, would have “devastating consequences for astronomy.” According to the study, no more than 100 000 faint satellites, below naked eye visibility, should orbit Earth, to safeguard our ability to observe the night sky with modern telescopes. The study is the first to compute the extent to which large and bright satellite constellations — which have also raised concerns about their impacts on health and the environment — would affect astronomical observations by making the night sky brighter.

Researchers to teens: get to bed – it’s good for your blood sugar

If you’re 18, getting a bit more sleep could matter more than you think. New research from the University of Copenhagen and COPSAC shows that even in healthy young people, longer nights of sleep are linked to more stable blood sugar levels the next day. What’s more, the relationship appears to go both ways. The findings suggest that sleep may play an important role in our metabolism long before conditions such as diabetes develop.

A common heart drug may have a secret life as a cancer fighter — and scientists now know why

Dobutamine is a well-known drug given intravenously to patients in acute heart failure, where it stimulates the heart to pump more effectively. Over the past decade, however, a growing body of research has reported something surprising: the drug also suppresses the growth of cancer cells in bone tumours (osteosarcoma), stomach cancer, and multiple myeloma. No one could fully explain why. A research team led by Dr. Safa Daoud, from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Applied Science Private University, Amman, Jordan, and co-led by Dr. Mutasem O. Taha from the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Pharmacy, The University of Jordan, noticed a telling pattern in the scientific literature: all the cancers where dobutamine shows activity also tend to produce unusually high levels of a protein called ROCK2 — a molecular switch that, when left unchecked, pushes tumour cells to grow, spread, and resist treatment. The team's central question was whether dobutamine's anticancer effects could be explained, at least in part, by its ability to block ROCK2 directly.

Alexandre Detappe receives a selective European grant to enhance immunotherapy

The ERC (European Research Council) Proof of Concept grant awarded to Alexandre Detappe (Gustave Roussy/Institut Strauss/Université Paris-Saclay/Inserm) will fund the Nano-BITE project, which aims to improve the ability of the immune system to fight solid tumors through nanomedicine. The goal is to develop a new generation of immunotherapies that are more targeted, more effective and better tolerated. Alexandre Detappe’s project is among the 182 projects selected across Europe (including 18 in France) to receive ERC Proof of Concept funding, a highly selective and competitive scheme.
