Hearing angry or happy human voices is linked to changes in dogs’ balance

About one in three older adults fall each year, which often leads to broken bones, hip fractures and other injuries. Notably, falls that happen while the individual is turning are almost eight times more likely to cause a hip fracture than falls that occur while walking straight. Now a new study finds that some older adults use protective strategies while turning to extra guard themselves against the falls. And while they may appear to move slower or hesitantly, research finds that it’s a smart adaption to keep steady.
The UC Irvine School of Medicine has received an $850,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to expand the work of the UC Traffic Safety Collaborative Program. Building on the progress and findings from the program's initial efforts, the expanded work will examine Orange County teen driver-parent relationships and their influence on driving practices during early teen driver licensure.
