Perceiving AI as a 'job killer' negatively influences attitudes towards democracy

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing our society and economy. A new study shows that the majority of people believe that artificial intelligence is displacing more human labour than it is creating new opportunities. Scientists at the University of Vienna and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) demonstrated a causal link: the stronger this perception, the more dissatisfied people are with democracy – and the less they participate in political debates about future technological developments. These effects occur even though artificial intelligence has had only a limited impact on the labour market so far. The study was recently published in the renowned journal PNAS.

Major open access publisher appoints new office head in Korea

MDPI, the open access publisher, has appointed Sangwoo Lee as head of its South Korea office. Mr. Lee joins from Public Relations agency Prain Global, where he served for more than three years as chief director of strategic communications consulting institute. In his new role, Mr. Lee will lead MDPI’s operations in South Korea and oversee marketing, communications, and external affairs. The appointment coincides with a major milestone for MDPI Korea: the launch of the Journal of Innovation (JOI, ISSN: 3042-8629), MDPI’s 500th journal. Prof. Dr. Junic Kim of Konkuk University’s School of Business has been appointed founding Editor-in-Chief. He is the first South Korean scholar to serve as Editor-in-Chief of an MDPI journal.

A comprehensive new review published in the Journal of Management synthesizes decades of research to understand the epidemic of workplace loneliness. By analyzing 233 empirical studies, researchers from Portland State University have identified how workplace conditions contribute to isolation and offer evidence-based paths to reconnection.

The research emphasizes that loneliness is distinct from social isolation. While isolation is about being alone, loneliness is the subjective feeling that one’s social relationships are deficient—meaning employees can feel deeply lonely even in a crowded office.

"Given the connection between workplace characteristics and loneliness, organizations should consider that loneliness is not a personal issue, and instead is a business issue," said Berrin Erdogan, professor of management at Portland State. "Businesses have an opportunity to design jobs and organizations in a way that will prioritize employee relational well being."
