Penn Engineers have cooked up a new way to improve mRNA delivery, developing an optimal “recipe” for ionizable lipids — key ingredients in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the molecules behind the COVID-19 vaccines and other innovative therapies. The method, described in Nature Biomedical Engineering, mirrors the iterative process of developing a culinary dish and may lead to safer, more effective mRNA vaccines and therapeutics.

University of Melbourne Associate Professor Giuseppe Barca and his team were named the winners of the Association for Computing Machinery’s Gordon Bell Prize at the SC International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis in Atlanta, Georgia.

A $340,000 National Science Foundation grant will support research led by Cal Poly physics Professor Thomas Gutierrez on neutrinos through the international CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle Identification) program. Gutierrez and his Cal Poly student team are exploring unproven theories related to nuclear decay, also known as radioactive decay, the process by which an unstable atomic nucleus loses energy through radiation. Their work strives to help better explain why the universe is full of matter, and to address other mysteries that have befuddled scientists for generations. 

Hongjun Lin from New York University will present results on the acoustic characteristics of a physical model of the Parasaurolophus’ crest as part of the virtual 187th ASA Meeting. Lin created a physical setup made of tubes to represent a mathematical model that will allow researchers to discover what was happening acoustically inside the crest. The physical model, inspired by resonance chambers, was suspended by cotton threads and excited by a small speaker, and a microphone was used to collect frequency data.
