Okayama University of Science has been ranked in the 801+ band in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026, placing tied for 23rd overall in Japan and tied for fifth among private universities nationwide.
The ranking, conducted for the second time by UK-based higher education magazine Times Higher Education (THE), evaluates universities’ contributions to interdisciplinary scientific research that transcends traditional academic boundaries.
Among private universities in Western Japan, Okayama University of Science ranked tied for first, alongside institutions such as Kindai University and Kansai University.
These results highlight the university’s continued commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research and innovation.

Their study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that misinformation about legality of medical aid in dying – a voluntary medical practice for terminally ill adults often abbreviated as MAID – is primarily shaped by ideology, while uncertainty is linked to structural barriers such as education level and financial strain.
