State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. joined Binghamton University President Anne D’Alleva, faculty, staff, and students on Oct. 1 to announce a $10 million investment to establish a Nursing Simulation Center of Excellence at Binghamton’s Innovative Simulation and Practice Center (ISPC) at Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Johnson City, New York.

Researchers led by the Greenwood Genetic Center have identified an unexpected connection between variants in the IDUA gene and inherited retinal disease. The international study found that individuals with changes in both copies of IDUA developed retinitis pigmentosa without many of the broader health problems typically associated with MPS I. Functional studies at GGC suggest that residual enzyme activity may help explain this unusual presentation, highlighting the importance of combining genetic testing with functional studies to improve diagnosis of inherited blindness.
