Controlling cystitis by targeting the source of pain with new therapies

The burning pain associated with cystitis affects millions of people around the world, and it can take days or even years for some patients to find relief from bladder pain, infection-related symptoms and the constant need to urinate.

A new study led by Flinders University has shown how certain pain receptors in the bladder could be targeted to reduce the debilitating effects of this common condition.

Focus on the guardians of the antibody response

For the immune system to effectively combat pathogens, antibody responses must be precisely controlled. So-called follicular regulatory T cells (Tfr cells) play a key role in this process by limiting excessive immune responses and helping to maintain immune tolerance. Researchers at the University Hospital Bonn (UKB) and the University of Bonn have now developed a robust laboratory method that allows Tfr cells to be generated from precursor cells and studied in a targeted manner. The results were recently published in the journal Cellular & Molecular Immunology.

Obesity inequalities in England have widened since COVID-19 – with steepest increases in new cases in young adults

Obesity affected nearly a third of adults in England in 2025, new research suggests. The study by researchers from the University of Cambridge, the British Heart Foundation Data Science Centre at Health Data Research UK and The George Institute for Global Health also revealed the most disadvantaged groups are bearing a disproportionate burden of the obesity crisis, and this gap has widened in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

UCLA Health study documents successful one-year outcome following first-ever bladder transplant

Farrell is a nuclear medicine didactic instructor at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in Concord, California, and director of strategic projects and quality analysis at Molecular Imaging Services. The award was announced at the 2026 SNMMI Annual Meeting.

Declining global acceptability of intimate partner violence tied to declining prevalence

A study of more than 60 countries shows those with faster declines in the social acceptability of intimate partner violence against women also tend to have had faster reductions in rates of such violence, as well as faster human development improvements. Irina Vartanova of the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS Global Health.
