About one in three older adults fall each year, which often leads to broken bones, hip fractures and other injuries. Notably, falls that happen while the individual is turning are almost eight times more likely to cause a hip fracture than falls that occur while walking straight. Now a new study finds that some older adults use protective strategies while turning to extra guard themselves against the falls. And while they may appear to move slower or hesitantly, research finds that it’s a smart adaption to keep steady.
